Equipment advice regarding a GPS

Hello,
I am constructing a flora for an undocumented mountain range here in Nevada. It is a self-funded project and I will be upgrading my GPS, a Garmin 12 from 2000. I do not have the funds to purchase a Trimble unit, but I would like to purchase a unit that I can upload and download points. I would like to be able to send points to a GIS firm that will provide some “pro bono” layers for me.
I have a price range of $1,000.00, do you have any recommendations or references on the web that may help me?
