buffer distortion

I can't seem to get buffers to to display symetrically around a point (like around a city represented by a point). They are either egg shaped, or look a little squashed. I have been able to get them to work in UTM projections, but not always, and I can't always work in UTM as I am geographically spread out over several zones sometimes. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
