When creating a new line file in edit mode how do you ensure that the attribute automatically calculates the line length in the attribute file?

The way to ensure that the length of the line is automatically calculated in an editing session is to use a geodatabase (personal or file) feature class as opposed to a shapefile. Using a geodatabase feature class, every time you make an edit to your line feature, the Shape_Length field will automatically be calculated in the same units as the coordinate system of the data you are editing.
