I was asked by a fellow analyst regarding any assistance/guidance on creating arrows (graphic) ... we generate many cartographic products in ArcMap .... she would like to finish the product in ArcMap and publish it to pdf directly (as opposed to exporting to an image file and finishing in PowerPoint. She is pleased with ArcMap's capabilities overall in creating finished products, but was wondering if there were are extensions/tools/etc in creating graphic arrows ... any guidance would be greatly appreciated. She is using 9.3.1 and the generic graphic tools at lower left of ArcMap. Please advise.

Mapping Center Answer:

You can use the same arrows that are available for point symbols.  Just insert a graphic marker, right click, select Properties, click Change Symbol, click Edit Symbol.  Change the Type to a Character Marker Symbol, and then select a font that has arrows (e.g., ESRI Arrowhead).  Then you can change various properties, like size, color and rotation.  You can also resize, recolor, and rotate the symbol using tools on the Drawing toolbar.
