Disperse markers format

I am trying to use the disperse markers tool for a project. However, I keep getting the same error message that says the map "cannot contain representations". I'm not sure what that means. What format do my layers have to be in to use this function? And how do I get it into that format? I've tried saving it as a layer, but that didn't seem to work either. Suggestions? Thanks

Mapping Center Answer:

The input for the disperse markers tool must be a point feature layer containing representations. Multipoint features are not a valid input.

The first thing to check is that your data is stored in a geodatabase because the tool only works on representation symbology and representations are only supported in geodatabases.

There is a blog post on our Web site that discusses using the Disperse Markers tool. Please see How to scatter stacked or clustered marker symbols for point features.
