Split shapefile

I have a shapefile of 193 bus routes, i use a tool to split the file by attribute into 193 separate files which i am then adding to arcmap. I then have to symbolize each shapefile one at a time to change thickness or color of the line. I then export to PDF which gives me the ability to create a file with layer control where a user can then turn on each route one at a time. Is there a faster way to do symbology on multiple files, if they are grouped, then exporting to a pdf does not allow layer control.

Mapping Center Answer:

There is no way to avoid the fact that you will need to create 193 layers in ArcMap if you want all of the layers to be turned on or off in the PDF. However, to speed up your symbolization of the layers, you can create a style in which the symbol names are the same as an attribute value for each of the 193 routes. Then if you first reference the style and then add the layers in ArcMap the symbology will automatically be applied.
