Ask A Cartographer

If label will encroach on another feature, don't place it.

I would like to tell my road labels this: if the label, whose font size must remain at 5 pt, is going to conflict with any road feature from any layer in my mxd, do not place the label. I can't find a way to communicate this. Thoughts? Thank you!

Mapping Center Answer:

First, you should set your road feature weight to the max (1000).  This tells Maplex not to label anything on top of the roads.  In Label Manager, open your roads layer Properties > Conflict Resolution tab.

Next, and still in the road feature labeling Properties, reduce the Label Overrun maximum distance to O.  This tells Maplex that if a road label will overrun another map item, it should not be displayed. You can achieve this on the Fitting Strategy tab.
