Why does changing the data's source change the label placements?

When I switch my data source from a direct SDE connection to my geodatabase's connection to the same data, some of my labels disappear. Why?

Mapping Center Answer:

The short story is that placement for the same data and extent should not change.  However, you are changing sources, and at least one dbms may be random access, meaning the records are given to the labeling process in a different order and that can affect the final placement solution for labeling.
