I have a point shapefile. The attribute table does not contain any fields for coordinates. I need to create and populate fields for latitude and longitude with decimal degrees. How do I accomplish this?

Mapping Center Answer:

You can accomplish this using the Calculate Geometry function. Here are the steps to follow:

1) Add a field in the attribute table of type: float. Name this "Longitude".

2) Now right click the field and select the Calculate geometry option. For the Property, choose the X Coordinate of Point and set the units to Decimal Degrees. If shapefile is not in a geographic coordinate system (GCS), you can change the coordinate system of data frame to GCS.

3) Once you have added the longitude, simply add another field of the of float data type and name that "Latitude" and repeat step 2, but this time for the Property choose Y Coordinate of Point.

Hope this helps!
