I need to know if it is possible to link a GIS map to a document (PDF, tiff, or other) so that a user could clicks on an object in the GIS map another document will automatically open. If this is possible, what is the best format for that second document to be in.

Mapping Center Answer:

The functionality you want is called hyperlinks. Hyperlinks can link to webpages or any document that Windows knows how to open. So for instance, you can link to PDFs which will open with Adobe Acrobat Reader, or you can link to .doc files which will open in Microsoft Word, and so on.

Hyperlinks can be assigned dynamically with the Identify window and those are stored in your .MXD, or you define hyperlinks within your data, where a field in your data contains the full path to your documents.
