I am trying to use an image as a background in ArcMap. How can I give the image geosource to match it with my map?

Mapping Center Answer:

First, add your image as a raster layer to ArcMap (Use the Add Data button; most types of images are also types of raster data).

Then use the tools on the georeferencing toolbar to first fit the image to the display (zoom to roughly where the image extent should be first).

Then add control points (at least 4) and then use the Update Georeferencing option on the georeferencing menu to stretch the image into place.

There is a help topic called, Georeferencing a Raster dataset, that has more detailed instructions and a video.
