Custom Fonts-centering glyphs

I've been using the font creating software FontCreator 5.6 to create custom font symbols for mapping. The problem I've been having is getting my custom glyphs to be centered. When I use them in ArcMap I have to apply x,y offsets to each glyph to align them to center. Are there any white papers out there on how to create custom fonts, or any advice you could give me as to how to get my symbols properly centered in my particular font software package? Thank you.
