How to make a hazy shadows along the roads?

Mapping Center Answer:

You can either use carto reps or buffered vignettes to achieve this effect.  Below are links to the detailed instructions. You will have to modify the methods if you want the shadow to only appear on one side of the road.

For carto reps: Please see the attached document.

For buffered vignettes: http://blogs.esri.com/Support/blogs/mappingcenter/archive/2009/03/04/symbolizing-shorelines.aspx

If you want a non-hazy shadow, that is really simple -- again it uses carto reps and here is a blog entry that has the detailed instructions: http://blogs.esri.com/Support/blogs/mappingcenter/archive/2008/10/21/3d-effect-for-a-building-footprints.aspx
