attribute field names and legends for charts

I am using the bar chart symbology for several data layers in a statewide map. I would like to be able to change the field names that display in the legend. I understand that I can click on the name in the TOC and change it there, but every time I alter anything it reverts back to the field name from the attribute table. Is there a way to change this permanently within the project? I would consider changing the attribute names in the table, but the descriptive names I need are too long.

You can also display the description in the legend -- here is the online help topic for this. What you want to do first is to add the descriptions.  You can right click the symbol on the Symbology tab of the Layer Properties dialog and select Edit Description to add or change the description. If you are using coded value domains, the description will automatically be populated for you (this would be the easier approach to take if you have many symbols or long descriptions).

After you insert the legend, right click it to see its properties. On the items tab, click the Style button. Here you can select from a number of predefined legend styles or you can select one and then click the Properties button on the Legend Item Selector dialog and make any edits you want for your legend.
