Prevent labeling over picture marker symbols - is there a better way than adding fake text.

Labeling
Hello,
I am using a picture maker symbol as my "label" for a point feature. I would like to make sure that no labels are displayed on top of the picture symbol. Since the picture symbol is much larger than the point feature, I cannot use feature weights to prevent labeling on top of the picture.
I was able to prevent any labeling over the picture by adding text with no color centered at the point. Then I can use the label collision rules to keep other labels away from my no-color text.
I was just wondering if there is a more elegant solution to preventing labels from being placed on top of picture labels.
Thanks
Mapping Center Answer:
Feature weights DO take into account the extent of the symbol that is used to show a feature. So if you use a large feature weight for that feature, then label should not be placed over the symbols for the point feature.
