Creating individual shapefiles

Hi. I'm trying to map out land by creating shapefiles over a basemap. Every time I try to create shapefiles, it stores it under the first shapefile I create. How do I create individual shapefiles that won't go away when I turn off the first shapefile?? Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am not sure how you are creating your new shapefiles. Did you specify a coordinate system for them? Perhaps that is part of your problem. If you could tell us how you are creating the new shapefiles and digitizing the features in them, I think we could help you a little better. Perhaps you could send us some additioanl information.
