Lake buffers

Symbology
I have been searching for a way to create the "buffers" around waterbodies that look like the ones you find in atlases. They usually have a darker ring around the shore and fade away as you travel further towards the lake center. I can do this through a gradient symbol type but using that makes drawing the map very slow. I would be happy if the lakes were a graphic but always quickly displayed the symbology. Can this be done?

We have written up how to do this in a blog entry called Symbolizing shorelines. This should be what you are looking for!
