Visual Joining of Separate Lines

I am producing a road network from some Ordnance Survey data (ITN from the MasterMap set). However, when I symbolise the data and use Symbol Level Drawing, I still have visible 'wedge' shaped gaps, where separate road sections join at an angle (screenshot attached).
I don't want to use end caps (either round or square), as these extend the roads and can cause unwanted overlaps. Plus, using Cul-de-Sacs to remove these extended endpoints, don't work when I transfer the file to Adobe Illustrator (which I need to do).
Is there another way to remove these gaps?
Thanks
Mapping Center Answer:
Try Merging the lines before you symbolize them -- we often do this to not only improve the appearance of the lines but also to speed drawing time.
