I would like to create a map of Maryland with points on the map representing hospitals. I currently have a list of all Maryland hospitals. What free online training course should I take first that will walk me through the steps needed to complete the task?
Mapping Center Answer:
Your hospitals will need to have either an address or x-y coordinates or a name. One solution is to use geocoding. From our online help, "Geocoding is the process of transforming a description of a location—such as a pair of coordinates, an address, or a name of a place—to a location on the earth's surface." Here is a link to a Geocoding tutorial that is on the online help.
If you already have the x-y coordinates, and your data are in a table, then there is another option which is to use the Add XY Data function. Here is the online help topic for this with the step-by-step instructions for using this tool: Adding x,y coordinate data as a layer.
