I am sure that I have seen a reference to this some time ago, but I cannot find it anywhere. Anyway, my question is, is it possible to create a Maplex style for street names in the Style Manager? There doesn't appear to be the street placement options that you get through the normal Maplex dialog box.
Regards.

Mapping Center Answer:

You can do this, but the primary issue with editing label styles in Style Manager is that you have to explicitly set the geometry type you are creating the style for. This is an extra step from just setting up regular properties in Maplex while editing a layer.

To set the geometry type, in Style Manager, right click the label you want to edit, click Properties, then click the Placement Properties button in the Maplex Label - Label Style dialog. On the Label Position tab of the Placement Properties dialog, you will see a Feature Type drop down at the bottom right. You can use this to set the geometry type. For streets, you need to specify line. This will then allow you to choose "Street placement" as the line placement type.
