elevation profile of a line

I am trying to figure out how to create profile views of a linear access road layer. The roads are broken up into 50 segments, each has a slope, and a starting and end elevation. Is there an easy way to do this? I tried using the 3D Analyst “Create Profile Graph” tool but after I click it the computer thinks for a few seconds and spits out a graph that is always flat and incorrect. There is no menu to select which attributes it should use for elevation or slope. My initial layer was just a polyline I then tried creating a PolylineZM thinking this is where my problem was, but again I couldn’t figure out how to tell arcmap which attribute represented the lines elevation.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks again

Mapping Center Answer:

The profile graph works off selected 3D polyline features or graphics. So you need to turn your 2D lines with 3D attributes into 3D lines. Use the Feature To 3D By Attribute geoprocessing tool to accomplish this.
