How to align extents in ArcMap?

I am a student at West Valley College in Saratoga. Another student and I spent the Easter weekend using a Trimble GPS to map tree species on campus this weekend. The instructor downloaded the data and created shapefiles for us.

We are working with an existing data set that shows irrigation, drains, etc., and a raster image. We have not been able to get our data to align over the image.

The coordinate systems all match and say they are Nad 1983 US State Plane, California Zone III.

However, when we pull in our shapefiles, they are about 2000 miles from the campus. Our instructor was not able to help us. Can you give us any idea what may be wrong?

We don't want to use the georeferencing with the raster image because we need these points to align with other point collections for correlations, etc. Is there anything beside the coordinate system that we should be cvhecking?

Thank you so much for your help.
