I am using AI and Photoshop to create emfs and bmps trying to get them as picture marker symbols. In the editing software they have transparent backgrounds but as soon as i bring them in they have white or black surroundings...no longer transparent...what am I doing wrong??

Mapping Center Answer:

To get a transparent background in the emfs and bitmaps when they are used in ArcGIS, you need to export your final picture marker from AI. Something happens in the parsing from Photoshop that doesn't keep the transparencies.

Your options are to:

(1) create the image in Photoshop, then save the file to .ai format and open it up in AI, then export the file as either a bmp or emf from AI,

OR

(2) work exclusively in AI and export to bmp and/or emf.

The suggestions above apply at least to versions 4 and 5 of the AI software.
