Linestyle problem.

Please see the attached illistration.

Using the ESRI Default linetype of “Railroad, in Street” I simply changed the color to red for one class of roads.
The problem is that the majority of the road displays either one side of the road boundary, or no boundary and just the center hatching.

No’s 1 are what the style SHOULD look like, but No’s 2 & 3 are occurring regularly throughout the document.
Note: They are ALL the same line style, and are the line style highlighted in the TOC.

What is going on here?

As you have now figured out, this is a function of the fact that your lines have so many vertices and contortions.  If you use the Dissolve tool and then perhaps generalize the lines using the Simplify Line function then the complexity of the lines will be reduced and the symbol should apply correctly.
