Saving causes massive file size.

Why is it that when I save a map, the map itself grows in size?
The map I currently am working started off at 5mb, then grew to a staggering 48mb.
I eventually transferred all the data to a new map and started over with a 5 mb file. As I was saving, I watched it grow about 300 kb WITHOUT ADDING ANY NEW DATA!
What gives?

There are a number of reasons that this can happen. For example, it may be caused by a large amount of geoprocessing results stored in the Results tab in ArcToolbox in ArcCatalog. Her eis a Knowledge Base article about how to deal with this:
