How do I remove small areas (building outlines) from a larger polygon that surrounds all these small areas? The end result being a polygon with small blank areas within it.

Mapping Center Answer:

Select all polygons in the feature class where area is larger than the largest of your small areas then save the selection (which should just be the larger polygon) as a new feature class by right clicking the layer in the Table of Contents, then Data > Export Data.  If you are doing it for just one polygon that contains numerous smaller ones you could just select the larger one using Select Features on the Tools toolbar before saving the selection as a new feature class.
