Hi Mapping Centre,

I was wondering if you have seen some really flash symbols for trees and powerpoles/powerlines? I am aware of the standard ones but was looking for something different for a presentation I was going to do.

Thanks in advance.

Mapping Center Answer:

There is a Trees style on in the ArcGIS Resources-Styles section of Mapping Center that you could use.  They are based on symbols used in the Esri World Topographic map. Using multi-layer character marker symbols, the variety of tree symbols you can create is endless. This style is meant to introduce (or reintroduce) you to the ESRI US Forestry 2 font so that you can create your own tree symbols and is explained further in the blog post on symbolising trees.  This further blog post on randomly varying the size and rotation angle of trees might also provide some useful advice to you for varying the appearance of the symbols by modifying size and rotation angles.  Finally, this blog post explores a way of symbolising a tree canopy.

There are some useful symbols for poles in the 3D Street Furniture style but if you want a 2D symbol then you might consider using the Marker Editor to modify a pre-existing symbol into something more suited to your needs.
