Hi,

A common mapping techniques is the "four color theorem" to differentiate areas on a map, as mentionned in the excellent "Designing Better Maps by Cynthia Brewer, page 94. However, do you have a sample script or VBA code to update an integer attribute field, which would be then used to color such maps? This could be an excellent entry for the blog.

Mapping Center Answer:

There is a script available for download from ArcScripts which does exactly this task. Search using the keywords: "four color" Select "Map Coloring - Four Color A Map" by Tom Gross.

We have an article on Mapping Center in the Maps section that covers how to set up four-color symbology:

Maps tab -> Analysis Map -> Creating four-color map symbology
