Controlling the display of a label

I have set up labels and converted these to annotation. The label style properties are shown on the attached file - using an accent bar and leader. I would like to change the side of the label that the accent bar is displayed on some of my labels from the left hand side to the right hand side as they would fit better in my map layout. However, it seems that it is not possible to control this. Please could you advise if this is the case?

Thank you.

Mapping Center Answer:

There are several ways you can influence how the software positions the labels though there are no automatic ways to change the side of the label in the way you describe.

First, you will get greater control of the text placement and conflict resolution if you use the Maplex labeling engine (if you're not already using it).  Using Maplex, you can setup more complex placement and conflict rules (such as User Defined Zones) which may force the text to be more optimally positioned in relation to your other map detail.  With User Defined Zones you can specify blocked areas where the label cannot be placed.  This will help you to force labels to be displayed in particular places.

Alternatively, you could modify the location of the annotation features in an Edit session which may lead to the labeling engine positioning the label in an alternate position without setting up detailed rules for placement and conflict resolution.
