Spatial Join problem

A coworker had a problem with a spatial join and asked me about it. I remember reading somewhere a similar problem and wondered if you can answer it.

Her spatial join involved a soils sample and contours but when the join was complete, the polygons changed shape afterwards with the soil data not resembling anything of the original.

What should be looked for here?

Mapping Center Answer:

Presumably you wish to perform a Spatial Join to join attributes of two layers that don't share a common attribute? An alternative approach would be to use an Identity analysis to create a new feature class from the two input layers. The attributes of the Identity feature class will be added to the Input features.
