Symbol Import

I need to be able to import complex customer symbols from another software into a Esri style as a representation marker. Do either of the following possibilities exist?:
• As a background raster file (to use as a digitizing template)
• In a common vector exchange format such as EPS

Mapping Center Answer:

There is no automated way in ArcGIS to import symbols from another software package.

If you have font editing software that will allow import of background bitmaps (to then trace), that is one way. Along that line you could potentially export picture files for all your existing (other package) symbols into a format compatible with ArcGIS - which would be either bitmap (.bmp) or enhanced metafile (.emf) formats.  You would then make each symbol into a "picture marker symbol".

If you export your symbols as encapsulated PostScript (.eps) files, after importing into ArcGIS, they could subsequently be assembled into a font with all the layers for each complex symbol, and then you would start building your "character marker symbols" with the fonts that you have created.
