I am trying to update my current sign maps. The roadway system I manage has approx 3000 signs and we want the maps with the picture of each of them and with the rotation of the image depending on the driving direction. What is the best and faster way to create and update these types of maps?

Mapping Center Answer:

There is no out-of-the-box way to do this though labeling or symbology, but we think we have a work around for you that comes at this from the sybmology angle.

First, use the Near geoprocessing tool to get a file that contains the X,Y location on the road where the points that the road symbols will snap to. If the point is not on the road, the tool will compute the angle the point makes with the road. This angle can be used to orient the symbols in the enxt step or, for points that fall along the road, add 90 degrees to make it perpendicular. Probably the easiest thing to do is make a new field that contains these angle values for all points, on or off the road.

Then use the Rotation option to rotate the symbols to the angle in the field you added. See Rotating point feature symbols in the Online Help for details. On the Symbology tab of the Layer Properties dialog box, click the Advanced button and click the Rotation option. For Rotate Points by Angle in this field, choose the field you added. You can keep all the other defaults. Click OK and OK to see the results.
