Combining colored and grayshade rasters with high fidelity - using Esri Base Maps and Vector Data

Hello Mapping Center,

Great post about Combining colored and grayshade rasters with high fidelity! I've been wrestling with combining Esri's World Shaded Relief base map with some global vector polygon layers, but the transparency solution wasn't working. Do you have any additional instructions about how to repeat the same steps using the Esri World Shaded Relief with a polygon vector dataset? Would I need to first convert my vector data to raster and then create the mosaic? Can I do that with a map service input or do I need a local dataset?

Glad to hear that you liked the blog. This technique will work to combine any grayscale and colored rasters. The World Shaded Relief basemap is not a grayscale raster. If you create a mosaic dataset by consuming the World Shaded Relief basemap service, you will end up with a three band (RGB) image. To convert that to grayscale, read our other blog entry Creating a Grayscale Version of Any ArcGIS Online Basemap. Using those instructions you would end up with a grayscale version of the World Shaded Relief basemap in a mosaic dataset.

Since the technique described in the recent blog entry is for combining two rasters, your next step would be to convert your vector data to raster. Once you have the grayscale and colored rasters ready, the rest of the steps would be same as in the blog entry.

Note: Esri will be releasing the World Elevation Services in near future, which will also include a multi-resolution hillshade (grayscale). These elevation services are in beta right now and you may want to join the beta program to see how they will work for you.

Note that the world topo map already has a rendered hillshade, so, as we said in the blog entry, if you already have this, you do not need to include the hillshade function. All the other steps would still apply.
