Isn't there text with a leader, similar to a callout box, but without the box? It's a line\arrow from the text to the point of interest.

Mapping Center Answer:

Yes -- to add a leader line to labels, follow these steps:

  1. In the text Editor dialog, on the Advanced Text tab, click to enable the Text Background option, then click the Properties button.
  2. Change the background Type from Balloon Callout (the default) to Simple Line Callout.
  3. Click the Symbol button to change the appearance of the leader line.
  4. Click OK to save all your changes.

Take a look at this online help document for more help with text callouts, with or without leader lines.
