Is there a way to have number/character appear inside of a legend patch?

Is there a way to have number/character appear inside the patch of a legend, without having to
convert it to a graphic? That is the legend will still update dynamically if any changes are made in the TOC.

Mapping Center Answer:

Sorry, there is not a way to do that. You could make a ‘dummy data frame’, with a ‘dummy layer’, for a legend, but in the end it’s just as much work as maintaining the ‘dumb’ graphics.

In the end, this is most often a problem of work flow; when I find that my map’s design is evolving through production, I create a draft legend, and it’s labeled as such. Then when someone evaluates the symbols on the map (they won't worry about the legend). That allows the symbols to fine tuned before having to do any hard work on the legend.
