Are there any standards for the "most legible" and "most commonly available" fonts for labeling, particularly at small point sizes? I'm tired of Arial!

Mapping Center Answer:

We're all tired of Arial.  Times New Roman as well.

But, that's what everybody has.  So foremost, depending on how your map will be published or shared, make sure that folks reading your map are not in the situation of needing to acquire the font themselves in order to see your map.

The thing about choosing a good font is that it really depends on the map you're making. Your choice of font impacts the effectiveness of your overall map design.

Since I haven't seen your map, and we don't want to be in the role of offering design guidance, I'm thoroughly glad there's already a solution available.  It's called TypeBrewer.  It should help you and it's a really well designed site, making it fun for you to come up with a good answer to your question.
