Offsets for coincident routes and line features

In ArcMap, can you recommend a strategy for symbolizing parallel mains at small scales so the
linear features in question do not appear coincident?

Mapping Center Answer:

With just ArcMap, there isn’t anything that will ‘just do it” in terms of offsetting coincident or nearly coincident lines in an intelligent way by doing something like applying an on-the-fly topological detection and offset function.

To do this task, you'll need to use the ArcGIS Schematics extension.

[later, we created a Mapping Center blog entry called Create route maps with the ArcGIS Schematics extension to cover how to do this.]
