Symbolize Inner Edge of Polygons

I need to symbolize along the inner edge of polygons while leaving the rest of the inside area as transparent. The attached image shows the effect that I am looking for. I know I can use 'clip' to create donut polygons, but I cannot turn off the boundary line of the inner polygon.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Mapping Center Answer:

One of our first Blog Entries detailed how to do this:

We discuss it a bit in other blog entries as well, so definitely use the search on the Mapping Center blog to find additional discussion of less intensive methods and their potential disadvantages.
