Cartography for web - resources

January 29 2009 | 0 comments

Does anyone know of any resources or training that is available that discusses cartography for the web? Cartography viewed over interactive maps applications will have very different limitations than conventional paper maps and I would like to find any training or resources that tackles this and highlights ways to optimize web performance through cartography (e.g. symbol selection, caches, annotation)

Mapping Center Answer:

There was a book published by the ICA called "Web Cartograpy" -- it is a little old now, but I still find it a good resource:

Web Cartography: Developments and Prospects By M. J. Kraak, Allan Brown
Published by CRC Press, 2001 ISBN 074840869X, 9780748408696 213 pages

Also, Bill Cartwright et al. wrote a text called "Multimedia Cartography":

Multimedia Cartography By William Cartwright, Michael P. Peterson, Georg F. Gartner
Published by Springer, 1999 ISBN 3540658181, 9783540658184 343 pages

And Cindy Brewer's two books through ESRI Press deal at some level with mapping for computer display -- they are:

Brewer, Cynthia A. 2005. Designing Better Maps. Redlands, CA: ESRI Press, 202 pages, ISBN-10: 1589480899, ISBN-13: 978-1589480896

and

Brewer, Cynthia A. 2008. Designed Maps. Redlands, CA: ESRI Press, 170 pages, ISBN-13: 978-1589481602.

I will add the missing references to our list books and texts on Mapping Center's Cartographers Favorites.
