Standard colors for forestry maps

September 28 2007 | 0 comments

Dear all,

I would like to ask you if there is some standard color used in forestry mapping, especially when there is a lot of classes, such many species of vegetation.

Yours sincerely,

Mapping Center Answer:

I suspect there are many thousands of tree species world wide, and mapping them is therefore similar to mapping geologic regions and soil types or eco-regions. Here is a link to a PDF file of such a map. The main idea is that when there are many unique kinds of, in your case, predominant tree species, map readers will not be able to depend on color alone to match the symbol on the map with the symbol on the legend. So, it is important to label the polygons as well.
