Stop overshoots from happening with an offset lines?

How does one stop overshoots from happening with an offset line?

In the attached image Dark red 0.4pt line is the real outline, light red 1pt line is offset -1pt. Both lines are the same polygon.

We had a similar question before on Ask a Cartographer.  Although the question was related to offsetting polylines, this method should work for you as well.

It is as I feared, there is no method without altering the data. Still, I'll keep the simplify approach in mind for projects which warrant the extra work and duplicate data maintainence overhead. Thanks for responding.
