Is it possible to create shadows around features like buildings?

Mapping Center Answer:

There’s an easy low-tech way to do this.

1.  Make a copy of your buildings feature class.
2.  Add it to your map and start editing.
3.  Select all the buildings in the copied layer and move them. How much will depend on the map scale you’re using. In most cases people expect to see the drop-shadows to the right of and below the buildings on the page.
4.  Save the edits and symbolize the moved buildings using a medium to medium-dark gray, optionally make them transparent (which will work great on screen, but may cause issues for printing a large map).

That will give you a basic drop-shadow effect.
