I have points on the map that are overlapping, is there a way that I could separate
them?

I’m assuming http://blogs.esri.com/Support/blogs/mappingcenter/archive/2007/08/27/displaying-coincident-points.aspx, which is a display-only solution is not what you want. We’ve created a new tool that will be released with ArcGIS 9.3 early next year that is designed for this task.

In the meantime, if you also have an ArcView GIS license, this sample script should do the trick:
