Group Layer into Legend

I would like to know if I can put the title of a Group Layer into the legend. I have a Group Layer that has a number of layers that are annual information.

For example: Group Layer name = Per Financial Year, each layer is labelled 1988-1989, 1989-1990 etc. I would like the legend to read "Per Financial Year" then the annual layers with symbol below.

Mapping Center Answer:

To give a label to the legend other than the default word "Legend", in the second dialog of the Legend Wizard you can change the Legend Title and the Legend Title font properties.

To label the individual layers within the group layer, slow click on the name of the layer and type in the name you want it to have (or right click the layer and go to Properties > General Tab and change the Layer Name there).  This will be the same name that displays in the legend.

For further control over your legend you can right click on the legend once it has been inserted and select "Convert to Graphics".  To break up the legend items even further, you can right click again once you have converted it to graphics and select Ungroup.  This way, you will have control over each element within the legend (symbol and font properties).

We also had a similar question on an earlier Ask a Cartographer question you can access that at:
