What: The idea was to provide the names of a few key places and landmarks. Why: These were needed to help the conference attendees orient themselves.

How: We added these features on an ad-hoc basis. All of the locales were stored as polygons and included an attribute for name and feature type. The named features labeled, and those labels were converted to annotation. The text symbol, for these labels was a medium gray color. We did not want these labels to compete with other labels so they needed to be differentiated from the background while not intruding on the foreground (the restaurant location points) of the map.

The Maplex settings were kept simple, because these labels would also be hand-edited. In fact the default settings were used. All the resizing and character spacing was the result of hand-editing the labels, the intention of which was to give the labels an appropriate sense of hierarchy with respect to the landmark or point of interest being labeled.
